Brad Pitt Just Revealed He's Drinking Again After 7 Years Sober β And What He Said About "Family Stuff" Has Us In Our FEELINGS π·π
After seven years of sobriety, Brad Pitt has opened up about getting "back off the wagon" β but in a more restrained way. The candid Esquire interview also touched on a painful period involving "family stuff" that had him understanding why some people view death as relief. We are NOT okay.
Well, this wasn't the Brad Pitt update we were expecting today. The Oscar winner just revealed he's drinking again after seven years of sobriety β and the deeply personal interview has everyone in their feelings.
In a new conversation with Esquire, the 62-year-old F1 star opened up about getting "back off the wagon" after maintaining his sobriety since around 2017. But before you panic, he's quick to clarify he's doing it differently this time.
The Tea β
- Brad Pitt confirms he's drinking again after 7 years sober, but "in a more restrained manner"
- He can have "a few glasses of wine" but admits he got "overconfident a couple times" and quickly realized big quantities still aren't good for him
- The interview took a dark turn when Brad opened up about a painful period involving "family stuff" β and yes, we're reading between ALL the lines
"I Have To Be Professional About It"
The revelation came up casually when Brad offered his interviewer a glass of wine, according to TMZ. When asked if the wine was just for guests, he gave a "little laugh" and dropped the news.
"I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon," he admitted, quickly holding up a finger to emphasize his next point: "In a more restrained manner."
Brad explained he got overconfident a couple of times and had to pull back. "I can have a few [glasses of wine]. But I can't have a lot," he told the outlet. "I have to be professional about it."
The Hollywood Reporter notes that given the timeline, it sounds like Brad has actually been off the wagon for at least a couple of years now β which makes this revelation even more significant.
The Bradley Cooper Connection
For those who need a refresher: Brad previously credited Bradley Cooper with helping him get sober after his 2016 split from Angelina Jolie. He spent more than a year attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and even publicly thanked Cooper at the 2020 National Board of Review gala.
In a 2017 GQ interview, Brad admitted he couldn't remember a day since leaving college when he wasn't drinking, smoking pot, or using something. He loved wine β maybe a little too much.
And Then It Got DARK
But here's where the interview took a seriously heavy turn, and honestly? We weren't ready.
Brad opened up about a painful period involving what he would only describe as "family stuff." He said suicide generally wasn't in his makeup, but acknowledged there was one period when the pain became so "oppressive" he understood how someone could view death as relief.
Yes, really. We are NOT okay reading this. π
He stressed he never planned to act on those thoughts and said his survival instincts quickly kicked in. But when the interviewer asked whether the period involved his children, Brad declined to elaborate, repeating only: "Family stuff. We could leave it at that."
Given the ongoing drama with his estranged kids β several of whom have publicly dropped "Pitt" from their names β the implications are heartbreaking.
"This S*** Ain't Easy"
Brad summed it all up with brutal honesty: "This s* ain't easy"** β even for a guy who says he "won the lottery."
And honestly? The vulnerability is hitting different. This is the Brad Pitt we rarely see: raw, honest, and clearly still working through some seriously heavy stuff.
The fact that he's being so open about both his sobriety journey AND the dark moments shows a level of self-awareness that's... honestly kind of beautiful? But also makes us want to give the man a hug.
What's Next for Brad
On a lighter note, Brad's upcoming Netflix film The Adventures of Cliff Booth (directed by David Fincher and written by Quentin Tarantino) hits Imax on Nov. 25 before streaming on Dec. 23. The interviewer got to see the first 24 minutes and described it as "a movie lover's dream."
So at least there's THAT to look forward to.
But after this interview? We're definitely Team Brad and sending all the good vibes his way. The man has been through it, and he's still here fighting. That takes serious strength.
