Plot twist NO ONE saw coming (except everyone at Taylor Swift's wedding, apparently).

Brad Pitt was spotted drinking at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Madison Square Garden wedding back in July β€” and according to Page Six, fellow guests were absolutely floored. Why? Because the Oscar winner has been famously sober for seven years.

And now, in a brand-new Esquire interview published Monday, Pitt has finally confirmed what everyone at that July 3 bash already knew: he's "back off the wagon."

The Tea β˜•

  • Brad Pitt was spotted drinking at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding at Madison Square Garden on July 3
  • Guests were shocked to see the famously sober star imbibing at the star-studded event (Adam Sandler, Paul McCartney, Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Tom Cruise β€” the LIST)
  • He attended with girlfriend Ines de Ramon and was photographed leaving with musician Beck
  • In Monday's Esquire interview, he confirmed: "I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon"

"In A More Restrained Manner"

So what made Brad break seven years of sobriety? According to his candid Esquire interview, it wasn't exactly a dramatic spiral situation.

"I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon," the Fight Club star confessed. "In a more restrained manner. I got overconfident a couple times, went, 'Yep, nope, not good for me.' Not in big quantities."

He explained he can have "a few" glasses of wine, but he can't "have a lot." His approach now? "I have to be professional about it."

Which... honestly, that Madison Square Garden wedding guest list would make ANYONE want a drink.

The Backstory Is Heavy

For those who don't remember, Brad first opened up about getting sober in a 2019 New York Times interview, revealing he'd joined a 12-step program after "taking things as far as I could take it."

He quit drinking after an alleged 2016 drunken incident on a plane that contributed to the end of his marriage to Angelina Jolie. The incident, which involved their six children, was investigated by the FBI (though no charges were filed). The former power couple were declared legally single in 2019 and finally settled their divorce in 2024.

Brad is now estranged from most of his children β€” Maddox (25), Pax (22), Zahara (21), Shiloh (20), and twins Knox and Vivienne (18) β€” and several have dropped his last name.

And Then It Got DARKER

The Esquire interview got even heavier when Brad opened up about a dark period involving what he called "family stuff."

"I've never been suicidal except for one little period," he admitted. "And in that one little period, I just thought β€” I just couldn't β€” just didn't see a way out. The pain was so oppressive that β€” I wasn't going to act on this, but I could feel β€” I could feel the cold steel of the bullet in my head, and it felt like relief."

He continued: "And I thought, 'Oh, OK, now I understand' β€” I understand suicide, in the sense that it's just relief. It's just looking for relief from the pain."

When asked if he was dealing with "kid stuff," Brad replied simply: "Family stuff. We could leave it at that."

Honestly? Our hearts. πŸ’”

So About That Wedding...

Back to the Swift-Kelce nuptials for a sec β€” because can we TALK about that guest list?! Adam Sandler! Paul McCartney! Selena Gomez! Gigi Hadid! Tom Cruise!

Brad showed up with girlfriend Ines de Ramon (they've been together since late 2022) and was photographed leaving the venue with musician Beck. A source told Page Six that people were "shocked" to see the notoriously sober star with a drink in hand.

Now we know: the comeback was already happening. Brad had quietly made the decision to drink again "in a more restrained manner" β€” and one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the decade was apparently on the agenda.

We're not saying Taylor Swift's wedding is what brought Brad Pitt out of sobriety, but... the timeline is VERY interesting. πŸ‘€

What's Next For Brad?

Despite the personal struggles, Brad's got a packed slate of upcoming projects, including "Heart of the Beast," an untitled film written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by David Fincher, and "The Riders."

The man's been through it β€” a public divorce, estrangement from his kids, suicidal thoughts, and now navigating sobriety vs. "restrained" drinking. And he's doing it all while the world watches.

As he said in the interview: "This s–t ain't easy. And you're talking to a guy who won the lottery."
