Stop scrolling, because Christopher McDonald just spilled some seriously vintage Hollywood tea — and we are absolutely living for the drama. 🍿

The Happy Gilmore star opened up about the time his fiancée Geena Davis left him for Jeff Goldblum on a European film set in the 1980s, and honestly? The whole story is equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming.

The Engagement That Almost Was

During an Aug. 22 retrospective with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, McDonald, now 71, got candid about his five-week engagement to Davis back in 1985.

"The inside story is Geena Davis and I were engaged to be married for about five weeks, and she fell in love with Jeff Goldblum doing her first movie over there in Europe," McDonald shared. The movie in question? Transylvania 6-5000, which also starred Carol Kane and Ed Begley Jr.

And here's where it gets even MORE dramatic: McDonald was performing Hamlet at the time and had three more weeks before he could join Davis on set. That's when everything changed.

How He Found Out (Ouch)

"I got the bad news from Ed Begley," McDonald revealed. "Did me that solid."

Yes, really — he found out his engagement was over from a co-star. According to E! News, McDonald admitted he was "really, really devastated" at the time.

"I don't blame him," McDonald said of Goldblum. "She's stunningly beautiful and everything like that, but you know what happens on sets, things happen, but I was broken."

The Tea ☕

  • Christopher McDonald and Geena Davis were engaged for just five weeks in 1985
  • Davis fell for Jeff Goldblum while filming Transylvania 6-5000 in Europe
  • McDonald found out from co-star Ed Begley Jr. while he was still performing Hamlet
  • Plot twist: They later worked together on Thelma & Louise and are now "dear friends"

And Then It Got BETTER

Here's the part that makes this story actually beautiful: In 1991, McDonald was cast as Davis's husband in the iconic film Thelma & Louise. When director Ridley Scott told Davis about the casting, the two exes met up for lunch.

"We had a really lovely afternoon," McDonald recalled. And then they did something absolutely WILD: "Let's do wedding pictures and put them around the house for the set decorators. We did all that, it turned out great and we're dear friends now."

Imagine taking fake wedding photos with your ex who left you for someone else. That's growth, people! 💪

Everyone Moved On (And Thrived)

According to Page Six, McDonald married actress Lupe Gidley in 1992 and they share four children. Davis, now 70, married Goldblum in 1987 (they divorced in 1990), was married to filmmaker Renny Harlin from 1993 to 1998, and then to plastic surgeon Reza Jarrahy from 2001 to 2021, with whom she shares three children. Goldblum married Emilie Livingston in 2014 and they have two kids.

She Owned It In Her Memoir

Davis actually addressed the love triangle in her 2022 memoir Dying of Politeness, and she didn't hold back.

"When I left for the movie, I was living with—and engaged to—one of the most wonderful men I've ever known, the actor Christopher McDonald. He was and is a truly beautiful person," Davis wrote. "And I broke his heart to be with Jeff, I'm ashamed to say. He didn't deserve that at all, and this dear man eventually forgave me, for which I will always be grateful."

She even revealed that she recommended McDonald for the role in Thelma & Louise, calling him "an incredibly talented actor, and one of the funniest people you'd ever meet (which was one of the reasons I'd fallen in love with him back when)."

The Happy Ending

Look, we love a good Hollywood love triangle as much as the next person, but what we REALLY love is when everyone ends up happy and healthy on the other side. McDonald and Davis proving that exes can genuinely be friends? That's the kind of mature celebrity energy we need more of. ✨

The fact that they went from a devastating breakup to taking fake wedding photos together just six years later is honestly iconic. And McDonald being so gracious about the whole thing decades later? Chef's kiss.
