Stop everything, because the God of War series just got its PERFECT Kratos β€” and honestly? We cannot WAIT to see this.

Dave Bautista has officially closed his deal to play Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's God of War series, Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter all confirmed Thursday. And after weeks of "will he, won't he," the answer is YES β€” and production is gearing up to restart in the coming weeks.

How We Got Here

Here's where things get dramatic (and honestly, heartbreaking).

According to Deadline, Ryan Hurst β€” who was originally cast as Kratos back in January β€” tore a bicep while performing a stunt in late June, four months into filming. The injury required surgery and would have pushed production into 2027, so Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television made the tough call to recast.

Enter Bautista, who was approached shortly after the decision was made and has now officially signed on to lead the two-season back-to-back production.

Why Bautista Is PERFECT For This

If you know anything about Kratos, you know the role demands someone who can physically embody a literal god of war. And as Variety points out, there are few people in Hollywood better suited for this than Dave Bautista.

The former WWE wrestler turned Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune star is already in the kind of shape the role requires β€” meaning he doesn't need months of prep time. Plus, he recently bulked up even more for the upcoming Highlander movie, according to Deadline.

Oh, and here's a fun fact: Bautista is actually half Greek, making him the first person of Greek descent to officially play Kratos in any capacity. Fans in the comments are LOVING this detail.

The Tea β˜•

  • Ryan Hurst was four months into filming when he tore a bicep doing a stunt and had to step down
  • Dave Bautista has officially closed his deal to take over as Kratos
  • Production is set to restart in Vancouver this fall β€” all of Hurst's scenes will be reshot
  • The series has a two-season order filming back-to-back, following the story of Kratos and his 10-year-old son Atreus
  • Cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Γ“lafur Darri Γ“lafsson as Thor

What The Show's About

For those who haven't played the games (where have you BEEN?), here's the setup: Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

The series will follow the path of the last two games, which introduced the father-son dynamic that became the emotional heartbeat of the franchise, per Deadline.

Callum Vinson plays Atreus, and the cast is STACKED with talent including Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri.

The Dream Team Behind It

Ronald D. Moore (Outlander, For All Mankind, Battlestar Galactica) is writing, showrunning, and executive producing under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout) will direct the first two episodes.

The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions β€” yes, really.

And Then The Internet Had THOUGHTS

The casting announcement has gamers and Marvel fans absolutely BUZZING. One commenter on Deadline joked that this is "the closest [Bautista has] ever been to playing a comic-accurate Drax the Destroyer" (and honestly, they're not wrong).

Others are calling it "perfect casting" β€” and after seeing Bautista go from WWE to delivering genuinely great performances in Dune Part Two and Glass Onion, we're inclined to agree.

This also marks only Bautista's second series-regular TV role following Season 2 of Apple TV+'s See, per Deadline. So yeah, Amazon snagged him at EXACTLY the right moment.

What's Next

With Bautista now locked in, prep begins this month for a mid-October production start in Vancouver, according to Deadline. The show is starting from scratch β€” none of the footage shot with Hurst will be used.

No word yet on a premiere date, but with two seasons filming back-to-back, we're guessing late 2027 at the earliest. (Worth. The. Wait.)
