Demi Lovato Is SECRETLY Returning As Mitchie Torres In 'Camp Rock 3' β And Disney Kept It Under Wraps Until NOW π€β¨
Stop everything. Disney just dropped a MAJOR bombshell days before Camp Rock 3 premieres: Demi Lovato is making a surprise cameo as Mitchie Torres! The pop star isn't just executive producing β she's stepping back into her iconic role. We are NOT okay.
Stop everything. Disney just dropped a MAJOR bombshell days before Camp Rock 3 premieres β and honestly? We're still screaming.
Demi Lovato is making a surprise cameo as Mitchie Torres in the new movie. Yes, THAT Mitchie Torres. The role that made her a household name back in 2008. And Disney somehow managed to keep this secret under wraps until literally three days before the film drops on Disney Channel.
According to Deadline, Lovato isn't just executive producing the franchise's return β she's actually IN it, reprising her iconic role. Camp Rock just wouldn't be the same without Mitchie, and Disney clearly agreed.
The Tea β
- Demi Lovato is making a surprise cameo as Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock 3, her first time playing the character since 2010
- Disney kept the secret until August 10, just days before the film premieres on Disney Channel on August 13
- The Jonas Brothers are back as Connect 3, along with Maria Canals-Barrera returning as Mitchie's mom Connie (now the camp director!)
- Hot new Disney stars Liamani Segura and Malachi Barton lead the next generation of campers
How They Kept Mitchie's Return Perfect
Director Veronica Rodriguez told The Hollywood Reporter that there were "thoughtful discussions" with Lovato about how to bring Mitchie back without overshadowing the new generation of stars.
"We wanted to find the right balance of how much she should be in the film," Rodriguez explained. And get THIS: Mitchie literally says in the movie, "This isn't about me, it's about them. It's their time to shine."
We are SOBBING. π
The director was very intentional about making sure the cameo felt organic and didn't steal focus from newcomers Liamani Segura (playing Sage) and Malachi Barton (playing Fletch), who are being tipped as the next Demi and Zac Efron respectively. "That girl has the voice of an angel," Rodriguez gushed about Segura to THR.
But Wait, There's MORE Star Power
As if Demi's return wasn't enough, there's ANOTHER surprise cameo that's going to make Disney Channel fans lose it: Milo Manheim from the Zombies franchise shows up as a songwriting instructor helping the campers.
"Milo passed the Zombies torch to Malachi, and they're buds," Rodriguez told THR. "We were over the moon when it ended up working out for Milo to come play with us."
The Jonas Brothers β Kevin, Joe, and Nick β are all back as Connect 3, and they were apparently very hands-on as executive producers, even getting involved in the creative on a new song their band performs in the movie.
The Nostalgia Is REAL
The new movie picks up with Connect 3 losing their opening act for a major reunion tour (relatable), so they head back to Camp Rock to find the next big thing. Cue: campers competing, friendships tested, unexpected romances, and ALL the drama.
Page Six covered the star-studded LA premiere on August 10, where Demi stunned in vintage Dolce & Gabbana alongside the Jonas Brothers. The cast also includes original star Maria Canals-Barrera, who's now playing camp director (her character Connie, Mitchie's mom, got PROMOTED from camp cook β we love to see it).
And for fans of the original movies, there are plenty of Easter eggs. Sherry Cola (playing Connect 3's tour manager) delivers a funny callback line about hats, Mitchie's songwriting book from the first film plays a role in the story, and there's a new "lovable mean girl" character modeled after Tess from the originals.
This Is Bigger Than You Think
The original Camp Rock films β released in 2008 and 2010 β are among the Top 10 Disney Channel Original Movies of ALL TIME. They launched Demi Lovato's career and helped catapult the Jonas Brothers to global superstardom.
Nearly two decades later, Disney says the films have been watched for more than 535 million hours across linear and streaming. That's INSANE.
Director Rodriguez says she approached Camp Rock 3 as "Camp Rock Plus" β taking everything fans loved about the originals and elevating it for today's audience, from the costumes to the choreography to the musical numbers (which feature multiple genres, just like today's actual pop charts).
The movie premieres on Disney Channel on August 13 and will be available to stream on Disney+ the next day. The soundtrack drops Friday, and Barton and Segura will be performing songs from the movie on the upcoming Worlds Collide Concert Tour.
