The entertainment world is reeling tonight after the devastating news that Hayden Panettiere β€” the beloved Heroes and Nashville star β€” has died at just 36 years old.

She was found unresponsive in her South Carolina home on Sunday afternoon, and despite paramedics' desperate attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

What We Know

According to 911 dispatch audio obtained by TMZ, a friend called emergency services at 1:51 p.m. Sunday reporting an "unresponsive female" in cardiac arrest at Hayden's Greenville, SC residence.

Responders discussed a possible overdose on the dispatch call, and paramedics performed advanced cardiac life support and chest compressions in an attempt to revive her. But nothing could bring her back.

Deadline reports that police say there were no initial signs of foul play, and the Greenville County coroner will perform an autopsy Monday to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Her Father's Heartbreaking Statement

Hayden's father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed the tragic news in a statement that's absolutely gutting to read.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," he said. "She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her β€” and to the millions who watched her onscreen."

He asked for privacy as the family processes "this unimaginable loss." We are sending them so much love right now.

The Tea β˜•

  • Hayden was found unresponsive by a friend in her South Carolina home Sunday afternoon
  • 911 dispatch audio mentions possible overdose and cardiac arrest
  • She had been open about her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression
  • Her final interview just months ago takes on haunting new meaning
  • She leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter, Kaya

Her Brave Battle With Addiction

Hayden had been incredibly open about her struggles over the years β€” and her honesty helped so many people.

According to Deadline, she told People magazine that she was given "happy pills" at just 15 years old. By the time she landed Heroes at 16, she was drinking and occasionally taking opioids.

"My saving grace is that I couldn't be messy while on set and working," she said. "But things kept getting out of control [off set]. And as I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn't live without."

The birth of her daughter Kaya in 2014 brought severe postpartum depression. Her relationship with Kaya's father, former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, ended. "He didn't want to be around me," she admitted. "I didn't want to be around me."

In 2018, in what she called "the hardest thing I ever had to do," Hayden sent Kaya to Ukraine to live with her father full-time. "I wanted to be a good mom to her β€” and sometimes that means letting them go."

Her Haunting Final Interview

Page Six reports that Hayden's last interview in May β€” while promoting her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning β€” now takes on devastating new meaning.

"I can hopefully leave the world a better place than I found it," she said at the Los Angeles book event. "The strength is in our vulnerability."

She also revealed that she wanted to direct someday to protect child actors the way she wished she'd been protected. "If somebody's pushing a child too hard, that's when I start growling," she said.

She talked about wanting to return to acting and how sharing her story had helped others. "So many people have come up to me and said, 'Because you've talked about your mental health, it gave me the courage to get myself help, and you saved my life.'"

She WAS saving lives by being so open. That's her legacy.

From Child Star To Superhero Icon

Hayden started as a child actor, appearing in commercials and soap operas before landing her breakout role in 2000's Remember the Titans alongside Denzel Washington.

But it was 2006's Heroes that made her a household name. As cheerleader Claire Bennet with superhuman healing abilities, she became THE face of the NBC phenomenon. "Save the cheerleader, save the world" became a cultural moment.

She starred in the Scream franchise as fan-favorite Kirby Reed, and then led ABC's Nashville for six seasons as rising country star Juliette Barnes β€” a role that earned her Golden Globe nominations.

She was SO talented. Gone way, way too soon.

A Family Tragedy

This isn't the first devastating loss for the Panettiere family. In 2023, Hayden's younger brother Jansen died at just 28 from an enlarged heart. In her memoir earlier this year, she revealed he'd been smoking crack and snorting heroin before his death.

She'd spoken about the guilt she carried over not being able to save him.

Now her family is facing another unimaginable loss.

Hollywood Reacts

The tributes have been pouring in from co-stars and fans alike. We're all absolutely devastated.

Hayden Panettiere was 36 years old. She leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter Kaya, her parents Skip and Lesley, and millions of fans who loved watching her light up the screen.
