Jon Snow Is Trading Westeros For Hogwarts β Kit Harington Just Landed THE Most Perfect Harry Potter Role πͺβ¨
The Game of Thrones legend is stepping into the robes of everyone's favourite vain wizard β and honestly, this casting is SO good we can't believe we didn't see it coming.
Stop everything, because HBO just dropped the most PERFECT casting news for their upcoming Harry Potter series β and Potterheads everywhere are collectively losing it.
Kit Harington, yes THAT Kit Harington, is joining the wizarding world as Gilderoy Lockhart. And if you're not already screaming, you will be in approximately three seconds.
According to BBC News, the Emmy-winning Game of Thrones star has been tapped to play Hogwarts' most insufferably charming Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in season two of the highly anticipated HBO Max series β and we are OBSESSED with this choice.
The Tea β
- Kit Harington is replacing Nicholas Hoult, who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts
- This marks Harington's THIRD collaboration with HBO (after Game of Thrones and Industry)
- He's already voiced Lockhart in Audible's star-studded audio editions β so he knows the character inside out
- Season one (adapting Philosopher's Stone) premieres Christmas 2026; season two will tackle Chamber of Secrets
From Jon Snow To... Gilderoy Lockhart?!
Look, we know what you're thinking: brooding, honourable Jon Snow playing the wizarding world's most self-obsessed peacock? But hear us out β this is actually GENIUS casting.
The official Harry Potter Instagram confirmed the news with a cheeky announcement: "Before we begin year two at Hogwarts, there has been a slight change due to schedule: Kit Harington will be stepping into the role of Gilderoy Lockhart."
For those who need a refresher (how dare you), Lockhart is the celebrity author who rocks up to Hogwarts in Harry's second year, all flowing robes and dazzling smiles. He's written a whole series of books about his supposed encounters with dark creatures β and fancies himself Harry's mentor despite being, well, a complete fraud.
Kenneth Branagh absolutely OWNED the role in the 2002 film, so Harington has some serious shoes (or should we say, perfectly polished boots?) to fill.
He's Already Done His Homework
Here's the thing that makes this casting even MORE perfect: Harington is a lifelong Harry Potter fan and already voiced Gilderoy Lockhart in Audible's full-cast audio editions last year, according to BBC News.
So basically, he's been preparing for this role without even knowing it. The man has RANGE, people.
What Happened To Nicholas Hoult?
Plot twist: Harington wasn't the original choice. Nicholas Hoult (you know him from X-Men, Mad Max: Fury Road, and most recently as Superman) was announced for the role earlier this month.
But according to reports, HBO had to let him out of his deal after the production schedule shifted and conflicted with his other commitments. No drama, just Hollywood scheduling chaos β we've all been there (well, sort of).
The HBO Family Reunion Continues
This casting marks Kit Harington's third major HBO project, cementing his status as basically part of the furniture over there. After eight seasons as the King in the North (sorry, spoilers for a show that ended years ago), he's currently starring in the BBC and HBO financial drama Industry.
And there's another potential reunion on the cards: Mark Mylod, who directed episodes of Game of Thrones, is helming some Harry Potter episodes and serving as an executive producer. So Harington could be working with a familiar face behind the camera.
JK Rowling is also an executive producer on the series, which is set to span multiple seasons covering all seven books. Yes, they're planning to take a full DECADE to tell the complete story β which means we're in this for the long haul, folks.
The New Golden Trio
The series stars newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
Oscar-nominated legend John Lithgow is playing Albus Dumbledore (yes, THAT John Lithgow), and Nick Frost is taking on the role of loveable gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid.
With Harington now joining this absolutely STACKED cast, season two is shaping up to be appointment television.
And Then It Got Even Better
The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is set to premiere on Christmas Day 2026 on HBO Max β which is basically the perfect gift for Potterheads everywhere.
Season two will adapt The Chamber of Secrets, bringing us basilisks, flying cars, Moaning Myrtle, and now Kit Harington's perfectly coiffed Gilderoy Lockhart causing chaos in the halls of Hogwarts.
We genuinely cannot wait to see Harington lean into the comedy and vanity of this role. If anyone can make us forget Kenneth Branagh's iconic performance while still honouring it, it's him.
So here's the real question: Are you ready to see Jon Snow trade his sword for a wand and his brooding stare for a megawatt smile? Because Christmas 2026 suddenly can't come fast enough.
