Stop scrolling, because Manchester United just dropped Β£70 MILLION on Brighton's Carlos Baleba β€” and honestly? The transfer window is serving DRAMA right now. πŸ’°

BBC Sport reports that the Red Devils agreed a breakthrough fee on Friday evening for the 22-year-old Cameroon international, who's set to complete his medical this weekend at Old Trafford.

The deal will see United pay an initial Β£65m, with a potential Β£5m in add-ons β€” and Brighton have even negotiated themselves a nice little sell-on clause for good measure. Not bad for a player they bought from Lille for Β£23.2m just three years ago!

The Timing Is… Interesting

Here's where it gets spicy: Baleba is currently injured with an ankle problem he picked up during Brighton's pre-season training camp in Austria. Yes, really.

United are bringing in a midfielder who won't even be available to play right away. But apparently they were SO keen to strengthen their midfield after earlier signings Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa that they couldn't wait.

The Red Devils targeted Baleba this week after deciding they needed more depth following the departure of veteran Brazilian Casemiro, whose contract expired at the end of last season.

The Numbers Are WILD

Once this deal goes through, United's summer spending will hit Β£153m. That's… a LOT of zeros.

But get this β€” according to BBC Sport, it's actually a "huge saving" on what Brighton were demanding as the 2025 transfer deadline approached last year. Brighton clearly know how to play hardball when it comes to their star players!

The Tea β˜•

  • Β£70m total fee (Β£65m upfront + Β£5m add-ons) for 22-year-old Carlos Baleba
  • Currently injured with an ankle problem but medical happening this weekend
  • Takes United's summer spending to Β£153m after Santos and Tielemans
  • Brighton bought him for Β£23.2m in 2023 β€” nice profit there!

What Does He Bring?

The left-footed midfielder should give head coach Michael Carrick's side "additional athleticism" when he's fit, and his eagerness to make the move north apparently helped speed up negotiations.

There's also some intrigue about his versatility β€” Baleba has played at left-back on occasion, which could solve United's ongoing search for cover for Luke Shaw. Or they might stick with regular right-backs Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, who have both been deployed on the left.

The Squad Situation

With Manuel Ugarte also expected to have left this summer before suffering a serious knee injury on World Cup duty with Uruguay, United's midfield was looking a bit thin.

Now, alongside Santos, Tielemans, and England international Kobbie Mainoo (who'll be available for Saturday's Premier League trip to newly promoted Hull City), Carrick has some serious options once Baleba recovers.

The transfer ends United's attempts to strengthen their midfield β€” at least for now. But knowing this transfer window? There's probably still time for more chaos before deadline day!

Are United spending their way back to the top, or is Β£70m for an injured player a risk too far? Sound off below! πŸ‘‡
