Michael Douglas Just Admitted The 'Romancing The Stone' Rumors Were TRUE — After 40+ Years Of Denying Them
After 40+ years of "we only flirted," Michael Douglas says in his new memoir that he and Kathleen Turner had a secret romance on the set of Romancing the Stone. Here's the tea.
Stop scrolling, because one of Hollywood's longest-running "were they or weren't they?" mysteries has just been answered. Michael Douglas says he and Kathleen Turner absolutely WERE a thing on the set of Romancing the Stone.
The big reveal comes from his upcoming memoir, One Helluva Ride, and yes, he's calling the "official story" what it was: "a lie."
The Tea ☕
- Douglas says he and Turner had a secret relationship while filming the 1984 adventure classic
- The pair spent decades insisting they only flirted and "yearned"
- He says he asked Turner for permission before going public, per TMZ
The "Official Story" Is Officially Over
For more than 40 years, fans suspected the sizzling on-screen chemistry was real. The duo's line, per Page Six, was always the same: lots of flirting, plenty of temptation, but nothing ever happened.
Douglas has now torn that script up. In an excerpt from the memoir shared by People, he writes that "the truth is that during the production of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship," as quoted by E! News.
He adds that it "wasn't a fly-by-night affair", but something that grew out of how closely they were working, the pressure they were under and how much they respected each other.
Sneaking Around The Jungle
Here's where it gets very rom-com. According to Page Six, Douglas describes the pair as friends first, then co-stars, then lovers. After exhausting days shooting in the jungle, he says he would sneak into her hotel room once everyone was asleep.
They reportedly kept it hidden from everyone, including co-star Danny DeVito and director Robert Zemeckis, TMZ reports.
For context, Douglas was still legally married to Diandra Luker at the time. He says the couple were separated and "both having extramarital affairs," per Page Six.
Then Came The Set Visit
The romance, Douglas says, ended when Luker visited the Mexico set with their son, Cameron.
"Diandra grew suspicious. A woman's intuition, I suppose," he writes, adding that she made it clear to Turner that the two were still married. That "gave Kathleen pause," because she didn't want to interfere. So they ended things.
Douglas says he went back to Luker for Cameron's sake, but admits they "shouldn't have gotten back together." They divorced in the end, and Douglas has been married to Catherine Zeta-Jones since 2000.
Why The Cover-Up?
Douglas explains that the pair stuck to the "official story" to protect his ex-wife and son. And the working relationship survived: the two reunited for The Jewel of the Nile, The War of the Roses and The Kominsky Method.
In the memoir, he describes rebuilding the sequel's script with Turner as feeling "like we were also repairing things between us," per E! News.
What Kathleen Said Before
This is what makes the story so juicy: Turner has dropped hints for years.
- In 2021 she told People, "I was yearning, babe, but he was still married," calling it "wonderful sexual tension"
- In a 2023 Guardian chat she said, "I think we might have been falling in love"
- She has also called Douglas a "misogynist" on several occasions (though she added he "may be different now")
Turner's rep hadn't responded to Page Six or E! News' requests for comment at the time of writing. One Helluva Ride lands on October 6.
