Olivia Rodrigo Just Dropped A Secret "Handmaid's Tale"-Inspired Song Called "Serena Joy" β€” And It's Her Most Political Move Yet πŸ”΄

The pop star surprise-released "Serena Joy" in a tiny 500-copy run at ONE record store in California β€” and the feminist anthem drops wide on Monday, just days before her all-female festival. This is everything.

Stop everything, because Olivia Rodrigo just pulled off one of the most buzzy surprise releases of the year β€” and the message is LOUD.

The pop superstar quietly dropped a brand-new song called "Serena Joy" on Friday, and yes, it's named after THAT character from "The Handmaid's Tale." You know, the woman who helped build a repressive patriarchy only to realize she'd trapped herself in it too? Yeah, Olivia went THERE. 🫒

The Tea β˜•

  • Olivia released "Serena Joy" as a limited-edition CD single β€” only 500 copies, sold exclusively at Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California
  • All 500 copies sold out by Friday night (yes, really)
  • The track goes wide to streaming on Monday, August 25
  • It's dropping just days before her all-female music festival, Daisy Chain Fields, happens in Orange County on August 30

Only 500 Copies In The Entire World

According to Variety, this wasn't your typical surprise drop. Olivia gave the exclusive physical release to one single independent record store in Tustin, California β€” and fans got to hear it THREE DAYS before the rest of the world.

"When we heard that Olivia Rodrigo was bringing an all-women music festival to Orange County, we were honestly just excited to see something this special happening right here in our hometown," the shop wrote on social media Friday morning. "We knew Olivia had a track record of supporting record stores, but we were still taken aback when we heard the news."

The store added that the gesture represents "an artist building a stage for women in music and raising funds for women and girls" β€” which, honestly? We are EMOTIONAL about this.

The Lyrics Are A Warning

The lyrics were printed right on the front of the CD (iconic), and while they don't explicitly name-drop "The Handmaid's Tale," the meaning is crystal clear when you know the title.

"Yeah, it's all for the cause / For the good of us all / And if you close your eyes / Then it can't be your fault," Olivia sings in the opening verse, delivering what Variety calls "cautionary-tale lyrics."

But it's the recurring hook that hits hardest: "If they do it to them / They'll do it to you / If they do it to them / They're gonna do it to you."

If you've read Margaret Atwood's novel or watched the Hulu series, you KNOW this is a direct reference to Serena Joy Waterford β€” one of the few women with power in the dystopian regime, who eventually realizes she's just as trapped and oppressed as everyone else under the system she helped create.

As Atwood writes in the novel: "She doesn't make speeches anymore. She has become speechless. She stays in her home, but it doesn't seem to agree with her. How furious she must be, now that she's been taken at her word."

CHILLS. Absolute chills.

She Confirmed It Months Ago

This isn't a total surprise for eagle-eyed fans. Back in June, Olivia accidentally revealed the song's existence when fans spotted "Serena Joy" on a studio whiteboard listing 18 potential tracks for her latest album, "You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love."

Asked about it in a video interview with Etalk, Olivia smiled and said, "I actually really love ['Serena Joy']. It didn't fit on the album. The record was very much a chronicle of a relationship β€” beginning, middle and end. But I hope that it'll be a part of something else down the line."

Well, DOWN THE LINE IS NOW, PEOPLE.

Feminist Fall Is Here

Fans are absolutely living for Olivia's political era. On the song's Genius lyrics page, one fan wrote: "Forget hot girl summer we're entering our dystopian propaganda era." Another added: "Hot girl summer into fascism fall."

And honestly? The timing couldn't be more perfect. Olivia's releasing this just days before Daisy Chain Fields, her all-female music festival happening August 30 in Irvine, California. The festival is being billed as a celebration of women in music, with proceeds benefiting organizations supporting women and girls.

Between the festival, this surprise single, and the Handmaid's Tale reference, Olivia is making it VERY clear where she stands β€” and we are absolutely here for pop stars using their platforms like this.

And Then It Got Worse (For People Trying To Find It)

The song inevitably leaked online Friday night, with fans sharing snippets across social media. Takedown orders were issued, but let's be real β€” once something's on the internet, it's ON the internet.

But the good news? You only have to wait until Monday to stream "Serena Joy" legally. Mark your calendars for August 25, because this is about to be EVERYWHERE.
