Taylor Swift Just Spilled ALL The Tea About "I Knew You Were Trouble" At The Grammy Museum β And That Ring Is STILL Stealing The Show πβ¨
The pop queen opened up about how her 2012 hit was originally a "really sad ballad" before Max Martin suggested dubstep (yes, really), clapped back at her critics, AND showed off that massive wedding ring from Travis Kelce. We are NOT okay.
Stop everything, because Taylor Swift just gave us the behind-the-scenes scoop we didn't know we needed β and honestly? We're still processing.
The newly-married pop icon sat down with Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles for an Icon Sessions conversation that dropped Monday, and she came with RECEIPTS. From revealing how "I Knew You Were Trouble" almost sounded completely different to her sneaky way of clapping back at critics, Taylor held nothing back.
Oh, and that 8 to 10-carat wedding ring from Travis Kelce? It literally stole the show.
Wait, "I Knew You Were Trouble" Was Originally A Ballad?!
Here's where it gets good. According to Variety, Taylor revealed that her 2012 hit "I Knew You Were Trouble" started life as a "really sad ballad" before producers Max Martin and Shellback completely transformed it.
"I was really excited to bring it in and I played them this really, really sad ballad and I was like I think just no drums," Swift recalled. "And they're like, 'What if it's dubstep?' I was like I don't know, guys. Let's give it a run. I don't know."
The dubstep suggestion ended up being "the best thing" that could have happened to the song. It peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the defining tracks of her transition from country to pop on the "Red" album.
"I really think that enthusiasm in the studio, it can really make or break what you end up creating," she added. And we can't argue with those results!
Taylor's Petty Clapback Strategy Is GENIUS
But wait, there's more. Page Six reports that Taylor also dished on her sneaky way of dealing with critics β and it's honestly iconic.
"Sometimes when people are mocking me it's really fun to mock them back," Swift told Mason Jr. with a laugh. "Sometimes I like to just use words that they have to look up in order to talk s--t about."
The shade of it all! π₯
She even mimicked a common criticism about herself: "It's like, anything you say, they're like, 'Oh, easy for you to say.'"
The Tea β
- "I Knew You Were Trouble" was originally a sad piano ballad until Max Martin and Shellback suggested adding dubstep
- Taylor claps back at critics by using "words they have to look up" when they try to mock her
- That massive wedding ring from Travis Kelce continues to blind us all β it's an 8 to 10-carat antique old mine brilliant-cut elongated cushion diamond, according to TMZ
- She also performed a mashup of "I Knew It, I Knew You" and "All Too Well" on her trusty Eras Tour piano
She Chose This Life β And She'd Do It Again
Taylor got real about dealing with the pressures of fame, acknowledging that she "could have opted out of this any day before it got unmanageably big."
"And I decided not to because I love it that much," she continued. "And that's just where it begins and where it ends. And everything that comes with this ultimately is worth it as long as I get to still make music."
She stressed that she's not looking for universal validation β she's making music for her fans. "I realized that I'm making music because I'm playing for the fans," Swift explained. "I'm putting this out for people who care about it and who look to music as a way to cope with their life in the way that I did."
And Then There's THAT Ring
We'd be remiss if we didn't mention that according to TMZ, Taylor's wedding ring basically outshined her entire performance. The full 7 minutes and 50 seconds of her Grammy Museum set is now available, and it's a wonder she could even lift her left hand to play the piano under the weight of that rock!
The newlywed has been proudly showing off the ring everywhere since marrying Travis Kelce at their star-studded Madison Square Garden wedding last month β and we are absolutely here for it. π
