Top Gear Is OFFICIALLY Coming Back After 4 Years β And The New Host Rumours Are WILD ποΈ
The BBC just confirmed the iconic motoring show is returning to screens after being "rested" following Andrew Flintoff's horrific 2022 crash β and the internet is LOSING IT over who might be hosting.
Stop everything, because the BBC just dropped news that's about to send petrolheads into absolute MELTDOWN.
Top Gear is officially coming back to TV β four whole years after the show was "rested" when co-host Andrew Flintoff suffered serious injuries in that devastating crash during filming. Yes, really.
The confirmation came at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Thursday, when the BBC's director of entertainment Ed Havard told the crowd what fans have been desperate to hear for years. "There has been a lot of speculation about this and we can confirm that Top Gear is coming back," he announced.
What Happened To Flintoff?
For anyone who needs a refresh: the show went off air back in 2022 after the former cricketer was involved in a terrifying accident at the Top Gear test track. Flintoff suffered serious facial and rib injuries when his open-topped three-wheeled Morgan Super 3 car overturned, dragging him face-down underneath it for about 50 metres.
"I thought I was dead," he told a Disney+ documentary last year, according to the BBC. Absolutely harrowing.
The BBC later apologised and paid compensation to Flintoff. He was hosting alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris at the time of the crash.
So Who's Hosting The Comeback?
Here's where it gets JUICY. The BBC is keeping extremely tight-lipped about the new presenting line-up β but the rumour mill is CHURNING.
Comedian Jimmy Carr is reportedly in talks to join the show, with The Sun breaking that story last week. When asked directly about Carr at the festival, Havard played it coy: "Jimmy would be a great host but I won't be discussing that today."
THAT'S NOT A NO, THOUGH. π
And it doesn't stop there. Former rugby player and Celebrity Traitors star Joe Marler is also allegedly in the frame to host, the BBC reports.
The Tea β
- Top Gear has been off air for 4 years since Andrew Flintoff's 2022 crash
- The BBC officially confirmed the show's return at Edinburgh TV Festival
- Jimmy Carr and Joe Marler are rumoured to be in talks to host
- No official announcement on presenters yet β but "more information coming shortly"
A Legacy Show Returns
Top Gear first launched way back in 1977, but it became an absolute global phenomenon in the 2000s under Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. After they left, broadcaster Chris Evans and Friends star Matt LeBlanc took over, before Flintoff, McGuinness and Harris stepped in during 2018.
The show will be made by BBC Studios, but they're not giving any further details just yet. Havard promised "more information on Top Gear shortly" β so we're all just going to be sat here refreshing our feeds until then, apparently.
One thing's for sure: after four years away, the return of Top Gear is going to be MASSIVE. The Stig is probably already polishing his helmet as we speak.
