Tottenham's Captain Just Agreed A £34M Move To Atletico Madrid — And Fans Are Calling It The Betrayal Of The CENTURY

Cristian Romero led Spurs through their relegation battle last season, got TWO red cards, and nearly skipped the final game to watch his boyhood club instead. Now he's off to Spain for LESS than what Spurs got for a teenager. This is WILD.

Stop everything, because Tottenham Hotspur just lost their captain — and the way this whole saga unfolded? We are NOT okay.

BBC Sport and Sky Sports are reporting that Cristian Romero has agreed a £34.2m (€40m) move to Atletico Madrid, with Spurs retaining a 15% sell-on clause. The 28-year-old Argentina international is heading to La Liga after five seasons in north London — and honestly? The timing couldn't be more dramatic.

The Tea ☕

  • Romero is OUT: Tottenham's captain is joining Atletico Madrid for £34.2m after five seasons at Spurs
  • The drama is REAL: He was sent off TWICE last season during Spurs' relegation battle and nearly skipped their final must-win game
  • Arsenal wanted him too: But Spurs refused to sell their captain to their north London rivals (at least they have SOME standards)

From Hero To… This

Here's where it gets messy. According to Sky Sports, Romero captained Tottenham through one of their most stressful seasons EVER — they narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League last term. Yes, really.

But it wasn't exactly smooth sailing. The defender was sent off twice during the relegation scrap and then missed the end of the campaign with a knee injury. Timing? Questionable.

And THEN — in what might be the most chaotic moment of all — Romero appeared to be planning to watch his boyhood club Belgrano play in the Argentina Primera Division final instead of attending Spurs' crucial last game against Everton. The backlash was INSTANT, and he eventually showed up for the final match, which Spurs won to secure survival.

Talk about a rollercoaster relationship.

The Numbers Don't Add Up

Here's what's really got fans talking: Spurs are selling their captain for LESS than what they got for teenage defender Luka Vuskovic, who joined Brighton for a club-record £50m earlier this summer, according to Sky Sports.

Romero originally joined Spurs from Atalanta in a £42.5m deal back in 2021 and made 156 appearances for the club (the BBC reports 156, while Sky says 124 over five seasons — but either way, he's been a fixture in their defense). He's scored 12-13 goals and picked up FOUR red cards in the Premier League alone.

Sky Sports' Michael Bridge summed it up perfectly: "Spurs are not going to get value for Romero."

Ouch.

Arsenal Almost Had Him

Plot twist: Arsenal were among the clubs interested in signing Romero, but Tottenham refused to sell their captain to their bitter north London rivals, according to Sky Sports.

Inter Milan were also in the mix, but Romero apparently always preferred Atletico Madrid — where he'll become Diego Simeone's fourth signing of the summer as the Spanish side look to bounce back after finishing fourth in La Liga last season.

Spurs, meanwhile, had already signed defenders Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi this summer, seemingly "laying the groundwork" for Romero's exit. But losing your captain after he just led you through a relegation battle? That's… a choice.

What Happens Next?

Romero's contract was supposed to run until 2029, but he'll now be heading to Spain to link up with Atletico's ambitious summer rebuild (they've already spent over £100m, according to the BBC).

Meanwhile, Spurs fans are also bracing to lose full-back Djed Spence to Inter Milan in a £25.6m deal. It's giving… fire sale? 🔥

Romero played for Argentina during their run to the World Cup final this summer and was scheduled to return to Spurs pre-season next week after being given extra time off. Instead, he'll be packing his bags for Madrid.
